Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Gilt-bronze Standing Bodhisattva from Gunsu-ri, Buyeo, is a gilt-bronze bodhisattva discovered in 1936 during the excavation of a Baekje temple site at Gunsu-ri, Buyeo, in South Chungcheong Province. It wears an elaborately decorated crown, with thick locks of hair falling on either side of the face down to the shoulders. The face is round and full, and its deep, inward smile is rendered so realistically that it conveys the gentleness characteristic of the Baekje people. The body, though wrapped in thick robes, has a relatively full volume and a dignified bearing. The garment crosses in an X shape at the abdomen and falls all the way to the ankles, spreading out on both sides like a bird's wing feathers, while another hem reaching the ankles is carved with U-shaped folds. The right hand is raised with the fourth and little fingers bent, while the left hand hangs down with the back of the hand showing. The shape of the robe and the hand gestures reflect the characteristics of the period, and the broad face and full smile, favoured motifs in Baekje Buddhist sculpture, suggest that this 6th-century statue realistically captures the features of the Baekje people.
