White Porcelain Prunus Vase with Inlaid Peony Design is a Goryeo-period white porcelain prunus vase, 29.2 cm high with a body diameter of 18.7 cm. The thick, angular mouth and the swelling shoulder line taper diagonally through the body down to the base, a form that appears to reflect the influence of the Northern Song dynasty of China. The body is divided vertically into six melon-shaped lobes, and each facet carries a diamond-shaped outline worked in inlay. The outlines were filled with celadon clay, and peonies, reeds and willows trailing over shaded ground with a waterbird wandering beneath, together with lotus flowers, were inlaid in red clay slip and white kaolin slip. Around the rim of the mouth and around the foot, lotus petals were raised in relief and then inlaid again with celadon clay, producing an unusual decorative effect made by combining celadon clay with white porcelain. It is a rare vessel that unites Goryeo celadon and white porcelain into a single piece, an important work with no precedent to be found.
