Rock-carved Standing Buddha in Singyeong-ri, Hongseong
홍성 신경리 마애여래입상 · 洪城 新耕里 磨崖如來立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Buddha image on Yongbongsan Mountain in Hongseong-gun, South Chungcheong Province. A recess was cut into a projecting rock face to hold the image, and within it a huge standing Buddha 4 m high was carved in relief. Above the bare head is a large topknot-shaped hair bun. The face is large and full in proportion to the body, and a faint smile gives it a gentle, benevolent expression. The robe covering both shoulders is rendered below the neck with several thick lines, but further down it becomes schematic, shown with thin lines. The halo, or gwangbae, representing the light radiating from the Buddha's body, is indicated only in outline by faint incised lines on the cut rock surface. On the whole the upper part of the face has volume and roundness, while further down the body the sense of volume weakens and the proportions become less balanced; the work is presumed to date from the early Goryeo period.
