Stone Seated Buddha at Ganwolsa Temple Site, Ulju

This is a stone seated Buddha at Ganwolsa Temple Site in Deungeok-ri, Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan; it is somewhat damaged but relatively well preserved. On the head, small snail-shell-shaped curls of hair are attached, above which sits a large topknot-shaped protrusion. The face is round and full, and the neat mouth, long eyes and short ears give a gentle, human impression. The shoulders narrow, and the body shows reduced volume. The robe worn over both shoulders is thin, its folds shown in a U shape. The fullness of the face and body together with the narrowed shoulders clearly show the characteristics of ninth-century Buddhist images.
