산청 율곡사 대웅전 · 山淸 栗谷寺 大雄殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYulgoksa Temple is said to have been founded in 930, the fourth year of King Gyeongsun of Silla, by the monk Gamak-josa. The temple's history through the Goryeo and Joseon periods is not recorded in detail, but during dismantling work on the present Daeungjeon Hall in 2003, an ink inscription was found on the underside of the central ridge purlin recording that the building was raised on an auspicious day in the 18th year of Kangxi, confirming that the hall underwent a major renovation in 1679, the fifth year of King Sukjong of Joseon. The hall is three bays wide and three bays deep, with a hip-and-gable roof that, seen from the side, takes the shape of the Chinese character 八 (eight). The bracket sets that carry the weight of the roof are in the dapo style, placed not only above the columns but also between them. The lattice of the front doors is elaborately worked with a variety of patterns, giving the building an even richer character. Inside, the ceiling is a coffered ceiling in the form of the character 井 (well), concealing the structure above, and a small roof-shaped canopy has been built over the altar. A relatively large building for a mountain temple of the mid-Joseon period, it is an architectural heritage that combines simplicity with a grand and dignified charm.
