Rock-carved Standing Buddha in Deokjeon-ri, Hamyang

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a massive rock-carved Buddha, 5.8 m high, cut into one face of a large boulder, showing the body, pedestal, and halo—a nimbus behind the body—all as one. Befitting such a colossal figure, the face is large and broad, giving an impression of strong, robust power. The ears reach down to the shoulders, the neck is relatively short, and around it are three lines known as samdo. The huge, rectangular body and correspondingly large feet display the imposing scale of the figure. However, the lower body is far too long in proportion to the upper body, and the hands are very small compared with the rest of the body, especially the feet, so the overall proportions are uneven. A scarf-like collar folds over at the middle of the neck, and U-shaped drapery folds descend regularly over the stomach and both legs. Such features are commonly seen in Buddhist images of the early Goryeo period. The beaded-string pattern and flame patterns on the halo, along with the pillar-like carving on the pedestal shaped like a pagoda base, are likewise characteristic of early Goryeo Buddhist sculpture.
