Stone Seated Buddha in Gyosan-ri, Hamyang
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a Goryeo-period stone seated Buddha now located within the grounds of Hamyang Middle School. It is a massive sculpture, over 4 metres tall including the height of its pedestal, but its halo has been lost, and the Buddha's face, right hand, knees, and part of the pedestal are also missing. The face is severely worn and the head badly damaged, so the details cannot be made out, but it appears large and robust. A face of this type resembles that of the Standing Rock-carved Buddha in Deokjeon-ri, Hamyang, even down to its bright smile. The robe leaves the right shoulder bare and is draped only over the left shoulder, and the body is sturdy and imposing. The folds of the robe crossing the body run in parallel, treated in a somewhat formulaic manner. The right arm is thick and powerful, and although the hand is broken, its fingertips appear to point towards the ground. The left hand, palm upward, rests on the knee. The pedestal is square; the front and back of its upper section are broken, while lotus patterns are carved on both side faces. The middle section of the pedestal bears eye-shaped ansang carvings, and cloud patterns are carved on the lower section. This Buddha is regarded as a masterpiece that well expresses the strength and beauty characteristic of Goryeo Buddhist sculpture.
