Stone Standing Buddha in Yangpyeong-ri, Geochang
거창 양평리 석조여래입상 · 居昌 陽平里 石造如來立像

It is said that near where this Buddha stands there once was a temple called either Geumyangsa or Nohyesa. Foundation stones remain around the Buddha, and stone lantern materials are scattered in front of it, making clear that a temple once stood in this area. This is a massive stone statue 3.7 metres tall overall, standing on a separately made lotus-patterned pedestal. The hat-like canopy placed above the head is a recent addition. The head is large in proportion to the body, with small snail-shell-shaped curls attached to represent the hair. The face is round and full, and the eyes, nose and mouth are also skilfully rendered. The curves of the body are faithfully expressed, retaining a slender yet elegant beauty. The thinly draped robe flows in U-shaped folds that trace a long oval across the two legs. The right hand hangs down holding the hem of the robe, while the left hand is placed at the abdomen with only the index finger extended. The two arms are held close to the body, giving a somewhat unnatural appearance. At the sole of the feet a pointed tenon protrudes, made to be inserted into the pedestal; only the upper part of the pedestal is now visible, and it is carved with lotus patterns. This is an outstanding Buddha of the late Unified Silla period, in which volume is well expressed in the cylindrical body, the curved waist and the two legs. Apart from the face, which is skilfully rendered in a rounded form, the sense of tension has diminished, but the work overall displays a notable refinement.
