Stone Lantern in Baegam-ri, Hapcheon

The site where this stone lantern stands is said to be either Baegamsa Temple or Daedongsa Temple site, though this is not certain, and since the lantern itself had collapsed and lain scattered before being restored, its original location is unknown. On a round base stone carved with an eight-petalled lotus flower stands a long, octagonal, undecorated central shaft, showing the light, buoyant character typical of Silla stone lanterns. Above it, an upper base stone shaped like a flower bud has a shallow groove cut into it to hold and fix the firebox stone (hwasaseok) in which the light was lit. The firebox stone is octagonal, with windows on four sides and, on the other four sides, standing figures of the Four Heavenly Kings carved in relief with very accomplished skill. The firebox stone was the space where the light was kept burning, and it is fascinating to imagine the glow it once gave off. The roof stone has a single support tier on its underside, with a groove cut into it to hold and fix the firebox stone. The slope of the roof, though thin, is cut with a clear, sharp angle, forming a shape typical of the Silla period. There were once floral carvings at the corners, but these are now all broken, leaving only traces. At the top, only a carving of an eight-petalled lotus pattern survives. The upper and lower base stones are splendidly decorated, and the groove for fixing the firebox stone and the arrangement of the Four Heavenly Kings figures are especially noteworthy techniques. Judging by its overall style, this is an excellent stone lantern of the mid-Unified Silla period, from the latter half of the eighth century.
