Honghwamun Gate is the main gate of Changgyeonggung Palace, built in the fifteenth year of King Seongjong of Joseon (1484). It burned down during the Japanese invasions of 1592 and was rebuilt in the eighth year of King Gwanghaegun (1616); the present building has since been repaired on several further occasions. It is a two-storey structure, three bays across the front and two bays deep, notable for facing east. Seen from the front, the roof is trapezoidal in outline, a hipped roof. The bracket sets that support the eaves are arranged not only above the pillars but also between them, in the dapo style. On the ground floor, two door panels are hung between each pair of pillars to allow people to pass through; the upper floor has a wooden floor, with small panel doors set into the front and rear walls that can be opened and closed. The carved ornaments at both ends of the roof ridge and the figures along the gently curving hip ridges add further dignity to the building. Although repeated repairs and repainting have diminished its original beauty, it remains, alongside other buildings at Changgyeonggung and Changdeokgung Palaces, an important resource for the study of early seventeenth-century wooden architecture.
