Mucheomdang House in Yangdong, Gyeongju
경주 양동 무첨당 · 慶州 良洞 無忝堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis building was erected in the mid-Joseon period as part of the head house of Hoejae Yi Eon-jeok (1491–1553), a Neo-Confucian scholar and civil official of the Joseon dynasty. It measures five bays across the front and two bays along the side, with the interior divided into three sections: the central three bays form a daecheong (a wide wooden-floored hall), and one ondol (heated-floor) room lies on each side. The front columns of the daecheong are left open between them, and the side facing the daecheong from the raised numaru (a wooden-floored pavilion-like space) is also open, while the rear and side walls are enclosed with wall panels fitted with doors. The floor plan is L-shaped, and rooms and wooden-floored halls are arranged using both round and square columns. This building functioned as an annex to the sarangchae (men's quarters) of an upper-class house, used for receiving guests, resting, reading and other such purposes. It shows simple yet refined workmanship and was built faithfully to the function of a byeoldang (a detached annex building), and it now houses relics of Hoejae Yi Eon-jeok.
