Chunghyodang House in Hahoe, Andong
안동 하회 충효당 · 安東 河回 忠孝堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the house of Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong (1542–1607), a renowned civil official of the mid-Joseon period. Ryu Seong-ryong held numerous official posts, and as chief state councillor during the Japanese invasions of 1592–98 he made great contributions to overcoming the hardships of the war. The Jingbirok and the Seoaejip, written by him, are also valued as indispensable sources for the study of the history of that war. Chunghyodang House consists of a haengnangchae (servants' quarters), a sarangchae (men's quarters) and an anchae (women's quarters). The sarangchae and anchae were built by his grandson Jolje Ryu Won-ji (1598–1674) and later extended and repaired by his great-grandson Nulje Ryu Ui-ha (1616–1698). The haengnangchae was built by his eighth-generation descendant Ilu Ryu Sang-jo (1763–1838) and consists of the main gate, rooms and a storeroom. A long haengnangchae faces west at the front, with the anchae, laid out in a ㅁ shape, and the sarangchae, in a straight line, connected behind it. The sarangchae was the space where the male head of the household lived and received guests; from the left it consists of a sarangbang (a private room), a daecheong (wooden-floored hall), a room and a wooden floor. The anchae was the space where the mistress of the house lived and managed household affairs; the kitchen is placed to the northeast, and the space turns in an ㄱ shape to include the anbang (main bedroom), the daecheong and the geonneonbang (a room across the hall). In front of the geonneonbang there is also a wooden floor, two ondol rooms and a kitchen, connected to the sarangchae. The wooden plaque reading '忠孝堂' (Chunghyodang), hanging in the daecheong of the sarangchae, is said to have been written by the renowned calligrapher Heo Mok (1595–1682). The house has retained its appearance from the time it was built relatively well, and it is a valuable source for research on Joseon-period vernacular house architecture.
