Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHongmu jeongun yeokhun (Correct Rhymes from the Hongwu Reign with Korean Translation and Commentaries), Volumes 3-16 (洪武正韻譯訓 卷三~十六), is a metal-type edition published in 1455, the third year of King Danjong of Joseon. The work was begun under King Sejong. Having created Hunminjeongeum, King Sejong compiled the Dongguk jeongun (Korean Rhyme Dictionary) in 1447, his 29th year on the throne, in order to correct the Sino-Korean readings of Chinese characters. Work then began, with the aim of also recording the correct Chinese pronunciations of characters, on transcribing into Hangeul the sounds given in the Hongmu jeongun, a rhyme dictionary compiled in Ming China; this project, the Hongmu jeongun yeokhun, was completed in 1455, the third year of King Danjong, in 16 volumes bound in 8 books. Today the first book, containing Volumes 1 and 2, has been lost, and only Volumes 3 to 16 - 14 volumes in 7 books - survive. The Hangeul and Chinese characters were printed with large wooden type for the large characters and with Gabinja, a bronze movable type cast in 1434, for the small characters. The general purpose and circumstances of its compilation can be gathered from the preface "Hongmu jeongun yeokhun seo", included in Volume 15 of Sin Suk-ju's collected works, the Bohanjaejip. This book is a valuable resource for the study of the Korean language and literature of the period.
