This Unified Silla-period Buddha statue is enshrined in Cheongnyongsa Temple in Yongmun-myeon, Yecheon County, North Gyeongsang Province, standing side by side in the main hall with the Stone Seated Vairocana Buddha of Cheongnyongsa Temple, Yecheon. The head is covered with small snail-shell curls, above which rises a large, low, topknot-shaped protuberance (usnisha). The oval face has finely and delicately carved eyes, nose and mouth, and the short ears and clearly defined creases of the neck are also striking. The shoulders are rather narrow, the hands and feet are slender, and the body as a whole seems weakened, as if it has lost its former tension. The robe draped over both shoulders shows parallel folds, and a knotted sash crosses the chest — features common to Unified Silla Buddhist statues. The halo, representing the light radiating from the Buddha's body, is oval with a pointed top. The head halo and the body halo are each rendered in two lines; at the centre of the head halo a lotus design is carved. On the body halo is carved a bosanghwa, an imaginary flower pattern, and flame patterns are carved around its edge. The octagonal pedestal on which the Buddha sits bears an inverted lotus pattern on its lower section and a fully bloomed lotus pattern on its upper section. Given the softened rendering of the body, with its reduced tension, and the form of the pedestal and halo, this work is judged to have been made in the late Unified Silla period, just before the transition to Goryeo-period sculpture.
