Stone Seated Vairocana Buddha of Bulgoksa Temple, Changwon
창원 불곡사 석조비로자나불좌상 · 昌原 佛谷寺 石造毘盧遮那佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is one of the Vairocana Buddha statues produced intensively between 850 and 900, and it shows the realistic and naturalistic characteristics of Unified Silla Buddhist sculpture. The head is covered with small snail-shell-shaped curls, and the topknot-shaped protuberance (usnisha) on the crown is large and flattened. On the well-proportioned face, the eyes, nose and mouth are arranged in fitting size and form. The ears are short, and the three folds on the neck, known as samdo, are clearly marked. The robe covers both shoulders and drapes over the whole figure, with its folds flowing down to the legs in soft curves. The hand gesture, with the right hand wrapping around the left index finger, is rendered very realistically. The pedestal on which the Buddha sits is octagonal and carved with lotus patterns and bodhisattva figures. Together with many other examples produced in this region centred on Buseoksa Temple, this statue continues the Buseoksa lineage, and its significance lies in showing the power of the Seon (Zen) school at the time.
