Eight Gifts from Ming Emperor in Chungnyeolsa Shrine, Tongyeong
통영 충렬사 팔사품 일괄 · 統營 忠烈祠 八賜品 一括

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krFifteen objects in eight kinds, sent to Yi Sun-sin by the Wanli Emperor of Ming when word of what he had done reached the Chinese court. Everything comes in pairs except the bronze seal. The seal has a handle and sits in a box marked as sent by the emperor; the characters on its face are cut in the nine-fold script reserved for official use. The command tablet is an octagonal block of wood reading "command" on one side and "commander" on the other, kept in a deerskin pouch printed with leopards. There are also ceremonial swords — one with a dragon and a demon head on the hilt — battle standards, red and blue rank flags, and curved trumpets. They are physical evidence of something rare: a Chinese emperor granting his own insignia of command to a foreign officer. The pieces were moved to Asan when Hyeonchungsa was rebuilt, and returned to Tongyeong after the city campaigned to get them back.
