Gwangajeong House in Yangdong, Gyeongju
경주 양동 관가정 · 慶州 良洞 觀稼亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the old house of Son Jung-don (1463–1529), pen name U-jae, an official active in the early Joseon period who was widely known during the reign of King Jungjong as one of the "cheongbaengni", officials celebrated for their integrity. The buildings, set on a slope, are arranged so that the sarangchae (men's quarters) and anchae (women's quarters) together form a square layout: the sarangchae stands to the south of the central courtyard, with the rest of the buildings making up the anchae. The family shrine is placed to the northeast of the anchae, and walls enclose both sides and the rear, leaving the front open so that the scenery of the lower ground can be enjoyed. Ordinarily the main gate connects to the servants' quarters, but unusually in this house it connects directly to the sarangchae. The sarangchae was where the male head of the household lived and received guests; to the left of the gate are the sarang room and a wooden-floored hall. This hall is an open-fronted raised floor (numaru) bearing a plaque reading "Gwangajeong" ("pavilion for viewing the crops"). To the right of the gate are heated rooms, a kitchen and small rooms, in front of which the anchae bends round in a "ㄷ"-shape. The anchae, where the mistress of the house managed domestic affairs, comprises a kitchen, main room, a large wooden-floored hall and a storeroom, and connects to the sarang room of the sarangchae. Square pillars give the house a generally simple appearance, but round pillars are used at the shrine and the numaru at the rear, lending them a somewhat grander feel. Balustrades run around the sarang room and the numaru, and the roofs of the anchae and sarangchae are joined as one. Gwangajeong House is a cultural heritage that provides valuable material for the study of houses of the southern region in the mid-Joseon period.
