Bongjeongsa Temple, at the foot of Cheondeungsan Mountain, is said to have been built by the Great Master Uisang in 682, the second year of King Sinmun. According to legend, Uisang, who had founded Buseoksa Temple, released a paper phoenix from Buseoksa, and where the bird came to rest, he built a temple and named it Bongjeongsa. This building stands facing east in front of Geungnakjeon Hall; it is thought to have originally been an auxiliary building for enshrining a Buddha statue, but is now used as living quarters for monks. Records found during the dismantling and restoration work of 1969 show only that it was rebuilt in 1616, the eighth year of King Gwanghaegun, so its original construction date is not known for certain. It measures three kan across the front and two kan on the side, and has a gabled roof that forms the shape of the character 人 when viewed from the side. Before restoration, the shape of the north roof was different, there was a narrow wooden floor (jjokmaru) in front of the room, and each bay had a single-leaf door. Now, however, double-leaf hinged doors have been fitted to all three front bays, and the sides and rear are enclosed with walls. The bracket structure supporting the eaves is built only above the columns, in the jusimpo style. Although the building is small, it is a heritage structure noted for its meticulously assembled framework, achieved through a variety of building techniques.
