Celadon Ewer in the Shape of a Turtle-dragon
청자 구룡형 주전자 · 靑磁 龜龍形 注子

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis celadon ewer, in the shape of a turtle-dragon seated on a lotus flower, was made during the Goryeo period; it is 17.2 cm high and 20.2 cm long. The face is rendered with great skill and realism, and parts of it are painted with gold. The spout attached to the back is shaped like a folded lotus leaf, and the handle is depicted as two twisted lotus stems. Inside each tortoise-shell pattern incised on the back is the character 王 (king). The handle is decorated with scattered white and black dots, and white dots are dotted here and there between the petals of the lotus-shaped base. The glaze is a jade-green colour and applied rather thickly. The overall proportions are well balanced, clearly showing the characteristics of the early 12th century, when figural celadon modelled on animals, plants and human figures was in fashion.
