Green-glazed Earthenware Cup with Stand
도기 녹유 탁잔 · 陶器 綠釉 托盞

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis green-glazed earthenware cup with stand is a cup coated in a yellowish-green glaze, complete with a dish-shaped stand to support the cup and a lid. At the centre of the gently curving dish-shaped stand rises a tall cylindrical holder to secure the cup, and the cup itself has a long foot fixed to its base so that it sits into the holder on the stand. Atop the lid sits a knob in the shape of a boju, a Buddhist wish-fulfilling jewel. Whereas the cup itself is hemispherical, the lid forms a curve that sinks downward from its sloping sides like a roof. This same curved profile appears on the lid of the silver cup with stand excavated from the Tomb of King Muryeong, suggesting it is a decorative feature already present on cup-and-stand lids from the Three Kingdoms period onward. The yellowish-green glaze was applied relatively thickly and evenly, but because the ware is low-fired it has flaked off in many places, exposing the dark grey clay body beneath. Parallel incised lines decorate the body of the dish, the cup, and the lid. The findspot and place of manufacture are unknown, but the piece closely resembles Three Kingdoms period cup-and-stand styles, especially the silver example excavated from the Tomb of King Muryeong, and similar forms are also seen among Unified Silla bronze vessels; it is therefore presumed to have been made in the early Unified Silla period.
