These earrings were excavated from a tomb at 215 Noseo-dong, Gyeongju. One earring of the pair had been taken to Japan, but under the Korea-Japan agreement concluded in 1965 it was returned to Korea in 1966 and has since been kept at the National Museum of Korea. The Gold Earrings from Noseo-dong, Gyeongju are a Silla-period artefact dating to the fifth to sixth centuries, formed in the typical three-part structure of a main ring, a middle ornament, and an end ornament. The main ring worn through the ear is thick, with a long, slender leaf-shaped ornament hanging from its middle section, finished at the bottom with a leaf-shaped end ornament. The main ring is neatly finished at both ends with thin gold sheet, and the long leaf-shaped middle ornament is decorated with incised granulated lines around its edges and centre, giving it a very ornate appearance. The heart-shaped leaf end ornament also has two overlapping rows of incised granulated lines along both its border and centre line, lending it a sense of volume and splendour. These earrings are highly valuable in that they are a typical example of the Gyeongju-style taehwansik (thick-ringed earrings), that their craftsmanship and formative qualities are excellent and their state of preservation very good, and that they show the stylistic development leading to the later gold earrings of Geumjochong Tomb and Bubuchong Tomb in Bomun-dong.
