Three-story Stone Pagoda in Sungjin-ri, Miryang
밀양 숭진리 삼층석탑 · 密陽 崇眞里 三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda now stands in the middle of cultivated farmland, and many fragments of roof tiles and porcelain have been found in the nearby fields and stream. No definite trace of a temple remains, but the site is said to be the former location of Garisa Temple. The lower part of the base is currently buried, so its exact structure cannot be confirmed, but the pagoda consists of a three-storey body set on a single-tier base. In the body, the first- and second-storey body stones are each carved from a single stone, and the first-storey roof stone is likewise a single stone; unusually, however, the second-storey roof stone and the third-storey body stone were carved from one single block. Pillar shapes are carved on each corner of the body stones, and the pronounced diminishing proportions between the storeys give the body an impoverished feel compared with the base. Each roof stone has three tiers of supports underneath and a single low block on top. When the third-storey roof stone, which had fallen away, was put back in place, a sarira hole, a cavity for Buddhist relics, was found at the centre of the third-storey body stone. Given the single-tier base, the steep slope of the roof stones and the simplification of the support block to a single low tier, the pagoda is presumed to have been built in the mid-Goryeo period.
