Sohoheon House, Andong

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis detached hall was built as a study for the scholar-official Seo Hae during the reign of King Jungjong of Joseon, and completed in the time of King Myeongjong (r. 1545–1567). It measures four bays across the front and two bays deep, and its roof is a paljak, hip-and-gable, roof, which in side view forms the shape of the character 八, meaning "eight". The attached room has a matbae, gable, roof, whose side view forms the shape of the character 人, meaning "person". The left three bays form a large wooden-floored hall, the right bay is a raised-floor pavilion, and two ondol-heated rooms are attached at the front, giving the building as a whole a T-shaped plan. Simple beak-shaped brackets are set above the pillars to support the eaves. A balustrade runs around the rear of the pavilion floor and the ondol rooms, and the interior uses materials not normally seen in ordinary houses to support the topmost member at the very peak of the roof. The pattern of two flying dragons carved on the roof tiles is rarely seen in private houses, and the antique construction techniques found throughout the building make it a valuable resource for research into Joseon-period vernacular architecture.
