Daeseong jiseong munseonwang jeonjwado (Confucius and His Disciples)
대성지성문선왕전좌도 · 大成至聖文宣王殿坐圖

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Daeseong jiseong munseonwang jeonjwado (Confucius and His Disciples) depicts Confucius at the centre with his disciples seated in a long row before him. It measures 65 cm wide and 170 cm high, and is painted in colour on silk. The image of Confucius, placed at the centre of the dais, is drawn larger than the other figures, while below the dais his disciples are arranged to left and right, shown in profile and seated facing the centre. They are depicted wearing square caps and holding hol, ceremonial batons, evoking the scene of a formal court ritual. Painted in the eighth year of King Jungjong (1513) as a copy of an earlier work, the painting is valued more for its documentary record than for its painterly quality. It is regarded as an important source that, through its vertically symmetrical composition, its bird's-eye perspective looking down from above, and its use of linear perspective, influenced the format of record paintings of court events in the Joseon period.
