This stele was erected to honour the achievements of State Preceptor Hyeso. State Preceptor Hyeso was born in Anseong in the 23rd year of King Gwangjong of Goryeo (972); he entered the priesthood at the age of ten and received instruction at Yungcheonsa Temple at the age of seventeen. He is said to have spent his final years at Chiljangsa Temple, where he earned the respect of many people. The stele today stands with its tortoise-shaped base, body stone and capstone set apart from one another. On both sides of the body stone, which is made of black marble, are carved two dragons running vertically along the length of the stone, the workmanship of which is outstanding. The inscription records the great monk's life and achievements in his honour, and the calligraphy conveys the fine bearing characteristic of the people of Goryeo. The following legend is associated with this stele, which was erected in the 14th year of King Munjong (1060). When the Japanese general Kato came to this temple during the Imjin War, an old monk suddenly appeared and rebuked him for his wrongdoing; enraged, Kato drew his sword and struck him. The old monk vanished, and the stele split open and bled, at which Kato took fright and fled. Today the body stone of this stele is indeed split down the middle, lending support to the tale.
