Stone Seated Buddha of Mubongsa Temple, Miryang
밀양 무봉사 석조여래좌상 · 密陽 舞鳳寺 石造如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Buddha statue 0.97 m high, enshrined in the Daeungjeon Hall of Mubongsa Temple, which is said to have been founded in 733, the ninth year of King Hyegong of Silla, by the monk Beopjo as a hermitage attached to Yeongnamsa Temple. The square face, with its narrow eyes and mouth, broad nose and short neck, is somewhat flat in expression, yet gives a neat, composed impression. The shoulders are broad and rounded, making the chest appear somewhat drawn in. The robe, draped over both shoulders, is so thick that it fails to show the folds of the drapery or the curves of the body beneath. The halo, which represents the light radiating from the Buddha's body, is divided by two raised lines into a head halo and a body halo, within which vine-scroll and lotus patterns are carved. On the outer edge of the halo, flames are delicately depicted as if blazing. Five small buddhas are carved on the front of the halo, and on its back is carved the Medicine Buddha seated on a lotus pedestal. This treatment of carving a Buddha figure on the back of the halo is the same as in the Stone Seated Buddha in Mireukgok Valley on Namsan Mountain, Gyeongju, a treasure, and is a rare example. Given the neat, well-proportioned rendering of the body, the simplified drapery folds and the increasingly ornate and intricate treatment of the halo, this work is believed to date from the late Unified Silla period.
