Three-story Stone Pagoda in Osaek-ri, Yangyang
양양 오색리 삼층석탑 · 襄陽 五色里 三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a typical stone pagoda of the Unified Silla period, located about 2 km from the Osaegyaksu mineral spring in Yangyang, Gangwon State. The site is said to be the former location of Seongguksa Temple, though this is not firmly established. Judging from other stone members scattered besides the three-storey pagoda, the temple is presumed to have been of no great size. The pagoda consists of a three-storey body set on a two-tier base. Pillar shapes are carved on the base, and grooves for rainwater drainage are marked at the four corners of the top stone of the upper tier. The body of the pagoda is made up of body stones and roof stones, each carved from a single stone; pillar shapes are carved at each corner of the body stone of every storey, and the first-storey body stone has a square cavity in which sarira, Buddhist relics, were once kept. The roof stones slope from the top and lift slightly at the four corners, giving the whole pagoda a light, buoyant feel. Having completely collapsed, the pagoda was restored in 1971; its neatly composed two-tier base and the thin sloped surfaces of its roof stones clearly display the characteristics of Unified Silla stone pagodas.
