Three-story Stone Pagoda in Gusan-ri, Uljin
울진 구산리 삼층석탑 · 蔚珍 九山里 三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda, in Gusan-ri, Uljin-gun, has a three-story body set on a two-tiered platform. On both the upper and lower tiers of the platform, pillar shapes are carved at the four corners and in the middle of each face. The topmost stone of each tier has a slight slope on its upper surface, and the lines of its four corners are clearly rendered. The body of the pagoda consists of a single stone for the body and a single stone for the roof at each story, with pillar shapes carved at the corners of the body stones. On the south face of the first-story body stone a long rectangular outline is carved, though what it was meant to represent is not known. The roof stones have five tiers of supports on their underside, their upper surfaces are thin, and the horizontal eave line curves slightly upward at each of the four corners. Overall the pagoda displays the stone pagoda style of the Unified Silla period well, but the omission of some of the carving in the middle of the platform suggests that it was erected in the late ninth century.
