When a temple held an event, a banner called a dang was hung at its entrance, and a danggan is the pole, or platform, used to fly this banner. The Stone Flagpole in Gaeksa-ri, Damyang, stands tall in the middle of a rice field, about one kilometre along the road from Damyang-eup toward Sunchang. The flagpole is erected on a stone carved with lotus petals, and is supported on either side by upright posts. The pole itself is formed by joining three long, slender octagonal stone shafts, with iron bands wound around the joints. At the top is a round iron boryun, a wheel-shaped ornament, from which wind-bell-like decorations hang, and above it an iron spike rises. Judging from the inscription on the stone stele standing right beside it, this present stone flagpole is known to have been rebuilt in the fifth year of King Heonjong (1839).
