Stone Standing Bodhisattva in Sapgyo-eup, Yesan
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This stone Buddha image, carved by joining two stones, stands on the slope of Suamsan Mountain in Yesan-gun, South Chungcheong Province. On its head it wears a crown shaped like a hood, and above that a flat hexagonal stone in the shape of a hat has been placed. The outline of the shoulders widens slightly further down, but with no sense of volume at all, it is flat, like a stone pillar. The left hand hangs down close to the body, while the right hand is raised to the chest, holding what looks like a stone staff that extends down as far as between the feet. Its huge size, its flat pillar-like form without volume, and its simplified manner of depicting the body show a style similar to the Stone Standing Maitreya Bodhisattva of Gwanchoksa Temple in Nonsan and the Stone Standing Maitreya Bodhisattva of Daejosa Temple in Buyeo, marking it as a Goryeo-period work with regional characteristics.
