Three-story Stone Pagoda in Nongok-ri, Gurye
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The pagoda stands on the slope of the hill behind Nongok-ri; since its lower part is buried, what appears above ground is a three-storey body set on a single-tier base. Pillar shapes are carved at the four corners of the base, and a thick lotus-shaped support is placed on the topmost stone to bear the body of the pagoda. The twelve elaborately carved lotus petals curl upward at their tips, and this kind of support is an unusual style not found in other stone pagodas. In the body, the roof stones and body stones are each carved from a single stone, and pillar shapes are carved at the corners of every body stone. The size also decreases at a constant ratio towards the top, giving the pagoda a well-ordered appearance. The roof stones are rather thick, and each has four tiers of supports on its underside. The sloped roof surface begins steeply and becomes gentler towards the edge, and the four corners of the roof stones curve upward lightly. The finial at the top of the pagoda has been entirely lost, leaving only a square decorative support, which is carved from the same stone as the third-storey roof stone below it. Overall, the refined stonework of this pagoda shows the style of Silla stone pagodas, and it appears to have been built in the late Unified Silla period.
