Three-story Stone Pagoda in Giseong-ri, Chilgok
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This pagoda stands at a site known only as the former location of Beopseongsa Temple, and takes the form of a three-storey body set on a two-tiered foundation. The lower tier of the foundation is made up of eight stones, with pillar shapes carved at the corners and in the middle. On the upper tier, large, round, broad ansang (niche-shaped decorative motifs) are carved so as to fill each face. The body stones and roof stones of the pagoda's body are each formed from a single stone, and corner pillars are clearly rendered on every body stone. The roof stones have five-tiered supports on their underside, with the four corners curving lightly upward, and of the finial atop the pagoda only the base stone survives. Given the two-tiered foundation and the five-tiered supports beneath the roof stones, the pagoda is thought to have been built during the Unified Silla period. It is unusual in having ansang carved on the foundation. The upper part, which had been broken by grave robbers in 1971, was subsequently restored.
