Iron Seated Buddha of Danhosa Temple, Chungju
충주 단호사 철조여래좌상 · 忠州 丹湖寺 鐵造如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Iron Seated Buddha of Danhosa Temple, Chungju is currently enshrined at Seokjongsa Temple. On the head sits a large topknot-shaped protrusion (ushnisha), and at its centre is a crescent-moon shape often seen on Buddhist statues of the Goryeo period. The long oval face has eyes, nose and mouth rendered with quiet elegance, the ears are long, and three folds are clearly marked on the neck. The robe draped over both shoulders is somewhat thick, its folds rendered with a few simplified lines, and the knot of the sash on the chest approaches the horizontal treatment that appears from the late Goryeo into the early Joseon period. The upper body, with narrow rounded shoulders and a flat chest, has a squarish, angular form, while in the lower body both feet rest on the knees with the soles facing upward, the parallel folds on the knees being quite formulaic. The detailed technique of the face and the crescent-moon shape on the head reflect characteristics of Goryeo-period Buddhist statues, and here local colour has been added through the schematic, distinctive treatment of the robe folds and the angular rendering of the upper body.
