Sungnyeoldang Shrine, Yeongcheon
영천 숭렬당 · 永川 崇烈堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the house of General Yi Sun-mong (1386–1449), posthumously titled Wiyanggong, who subjugated the Jurchen and conquered Daemado (Tsushima) Island during the reign of King Sejong of Joseon, rising to the offices of Military Commander of Gyeongsang-do Province and Yeongjungchuwonsa, a senior post in the royal Privy Council. Sungnyeoldang was originally the house where Yi Sun-mong ordinarily resided; after Wiyanggong died without an heir, his slaves and land were donated to the local Confucian school and the building was used as a Hyangseodang, a local school hall, and in 1614 people built a shrine behind it and enshrined his spirit tablet. Today the spirit tablet is kept in the shrine behind Sungnyeoldang, while Sungnyeoldang itself is used as a lecture hall. It is a straight-line building five bays wide and three bays deep. In plan, the central bay and the two flanking bays are floored with well-frame flooring to form a wooden-floored hall (daecheong), while ondol-heated rooms occupy the eaves-bays to either side. The roof structure of this building is highly unusual: at first glance it looks like a hipped-and-gabled (paljak) tile roof, but in fact the central bay and flanking bays are topped with a gable (matbae) roof, with single-sloped roofs attached to left and right over the eaves-bays. Roofs of this hybrid structure appear frequently in the North Gyeongsang region, especially around Yeongcheon; the same roof form is found at the Ohoedang head house in Seonggok-ri, Jayang-myeon, and at the Myeongnyundang hall of Sillyeong Hyanggyo in Hwaseong-ri, Sillyeong-myeon (Gyeongsangbuk-do Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 168), so it can be regarded as a distinctive feature of the region. Although the structure shows the techniques of the early Joseon period, some finely and beautifully carved details reveal techniques of the late Joseon period. Investigation shows that the building was repaired several times, but overall it is a modestly and solidly built house.
