Hanbyeongnu Pavilion in Cheongpung, Jecheon
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This building was erected in 1317, the fourth year of King Chungsuk of Goryeo, to the east of the guest house, to commemorate the monk Cheonggong—a native of Cheongpung-hyeon—being appointed royal preceptor (wangsa), on which occasion Cheongpung-hyeon was elevated to the status of a county (gun). Structurally, it consists of a two-storey pavilion of four bays across the front and three bays deep, joined to a stepped wing building of three bays across the front and one bay deep. The spaces between the pillars are all left open, and a balustrade runs around all four sides. Inside the building hang framed inscriptions by Song Si-yeol and Kim Su-jeung, and a plaque reading 'Cheongpung Hanbyeongnu' written by Kim Jeong-hui. Together with Yeongnamnu Pavilion in Miryang and Gwanghallu Pavilion in Namwon, it is a representative example of a Joseon-period pavilion with a small annexe attached beside the main hall, and of the three it has the simplest and most refined exterior. It originally stood in Eup-ri, Cheongpung-myeon, but was relocated to its present site in 1983 after the town was submerged by the construction of Chungju Dam.
