Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is located about 300 metres east of Yongmunsa Temple, and records the life and achievements of State Preceptor Jeongji (1324–1395). State Preceptor Jeongji was a monk of the late Goryeo period, a native of Jaeryeong in Hwanghae Province, who studied in Yeongyeong (present-day Beijing). He passed away in the fourth year of King Taejo of Joseon, and when King Taejo heard that brilliant sari, Buddhist relics, had emerged from him in great numbers, he bestowed on him the posthumous title 'State Preceptor Jeongji.' The stupa and stele stand about 80 metres apart. The stupa was erected by Jo-an and others; its base stone and lower pedestal stone are square, while the upper pedestal stone and the body of the stupa are octagonal, so that the overall form is octagonal. Lotus patterns are carved on the upper and lower pedestal stones, while the drum-shaped middle pedestal stone shows only soft curves without decoration. On the body of the stupa, a formal door-shaped design is carved on one side only. The roof stone has a three-tiered support beneath it, and rafters are carved at each corner under the eaves. On the upper surface of the roof stone is a prominent octagonal roofline, and at its edges are floral ornaments that, unlike earlier forms, appear degenerate. At the top sits a lotus-shaped finial ornament. The stele is a small stone monument; the upper corners are cut as if folded on both sides, and fine lines are drawn around the inscribed characters. The epitaph was composed by the renowned contemporary scholar Gwon Geun. It originally stood on a natural rock 20 metres below State Preceptor Jeongji's stupa, but after it came loose and lay abandoned within the temple grounds, it was erected at its present location around 1970.
