Flagpole Supports in Eupnae-dong, Asan

When a temple held a ceremony, a banner called a dang was hung at its entrance. The pole on which this banner was hung is called a danggan, and the two stone pillars that support the danggan on either side are called flagpole supports. Standing about 3 km from downtown Onyang towards Songak, these flagpole supports are made of granite. The platform base is buried underground, so only the two facing pillars are visible above ground. The tops of the pillars form a gentle curve, and a square groove is cut into the inner face of each to hold the flagpole firmly in place. The surface is so badly worn that it cannot be confirmed whether any other carving once existed, but the outer edges of the pillars have been chamfered, creating an effect like carved vertical stripes. The pillars are finished to a nearly uniform thickness from top to bottom, giving the whole an overall refined elegance. The present location of the supports is thought to be their original site, and although their exact date is unknown, their overall style suggests that they were made in the Goryeo period.
