Three-story Stone Pagoda in Mulgeol-ri, Hongcheon
홍천 물걸리 삼층석탑 · 洪川 物傑里 三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a pagoda of the Unified Silla period standing at the Mulgeol-ri temple site. Judging from the many relics remaining at the site, a fairly large temple is thought to have once stood here, though its name has not been passed down. The pagoda consists of a three-storey body set on a two-tiered base. Each face of the upper and lower base tiers is carved with a single pillar shape at each corner and one in the centre. The body of each storey is made from a single stone for the main block and a single stone for the roof stone, and each corner of the main blocks is carved with a pillar shape. The underside supports of the roof stones have five tiers on the first and second storeys, reduced to four tiers on the third storey. The sloping surfaces are flat and thin, with sharply defined corner lines, giving a crisp upward lift at the eaves' ends. The finial at the top is lost, and only the base plate (noban) that supported it remains. Overall this is a typical Unified Silla pagoda, but the reduction of the base's central pillar on each face to a single one, and the reduction of the roof-stone supports on the third storey to four tiers - which breaks the harmony with the storeys below - suggest a somewhat later date, in the latter half of the 9th century.
