The Documents of Gwon Ju's Family are papers handed down through the generations in the household of the eldest descendants of Gwon Ju, pen name Hwasan (1457–1505), a scholar of the reign of King Yeonsangun. Gwon Ju passed the munkwa civil examination under King Seongjong, and, being skilled in Chinese, travelled to Liaodong as a jiljeonggwan, an official responsible for verifying matters of language and protocol. He later rose through the posts of Dosungji (chief royal secretary) and governor of Chungcheong Province to the senior court office of Dongji Junchubusa, but in 1504, the tenth year of King Yeonsangun, he was implicated in the Gapja Purge, exiled to Pyeonghae, and put to death. After the restoration that brought King Jungjong to the throne, he was posthumously appointed Ubuchamchan, clearing him of the unjust charges he had borne. The documents consist of two items: a deed for the sale of a house site in Hwanghwa-bang, in the capital of Hanseong, and a document of property transfer. Both are valued as important material for the study of the economic and family history of the early Joseon period.
