Chunghyodang House of the Yean Yi Clan, Andong
안동 예안이씨 충효당 · 安東 禮安李氏 忠孝堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house is a historic dwelling bound up with the loyalty and filial piety of Yi Hong-in and his son: Yi Hong-in served as a righteous army commander during the Japanese invasions of 1592-98 and died a martyr's death for his country. Home to the descendants of Yi Hong-in, it is thought to have been built in 1551, the sixth year of King Myeongjong, making it a mid-Joseon building; it is called Chunghyodang, meaning 'Hall of Loyalty and Filial Piety.' The women's quarters and the men's quarters are joined together, forming the square (mieum-shaped) floor plan commonly seen in the Andong region. At the centre of the house is a simple building arranged around a courtyard, with gates leading outside on the south and west sides. The south gate was originally the main entrance, but the west gate is now used instead; it appears that after an outer building that once stood parallel outside the west gate was demolished, the entrance was moved as well. The door frames are wide and sturdy relative to the space, and the house is notable for having so many doors. To the west stands a detached building called Ssangsudang, with a straight-line plan and a hip-and-gable roof whose side profile resembles the character for 'eight'. The name Ssangsudang means that a single family embodied both loyalty and filial piety: it commemorates the loyalty of Yi Hong-in, who rose as a righteous army commander during the Japanese invasions and died a heroic death fighting the invaders, and the utmost filial devotion of his descendant Han-o. The house has been partly repaired and altered, but it stands against the backdrop of a low hill, looking out over the Pungsan plain. Unlike most upper-class houses, it strongly retains the simple, unpretentious character of an ordinary folk dwelling.
