Celadon inlay refers to a technique in which a vessel is shaped from clay, a design or picture is incised into its surface, the incised areas are then filled with white or red clay, and the vessel is glazed and fired so that, seen through the transparent celadon glaze, the design appears in white or black; the technique arose in the first half of the twelfth century and reached its peak in the mid-twelfth century. This Celadon Prunus Vase with Inlaid Cloud, Crane, Peony, and Chrysanthemum Design is 32.2 cm high, with a mouth diameter of 7 cm and a base diameter of 14.5 cm. Compared with the many inlaid celadon prunus vases produced during the Goryeo period, this vase has softly sloping shoulders that give a gentle impression, and a broad base that lends it a sense of stability. The glaze has melted well to produce a clear, transparent finish, and the colour is very beautiful. The small mouth curves slightly outward at the rim while standing upright, and the shoulder is encircled by a lotus design inlaid in black and white. Around the foot is a band of a lightning pattern, and directly above it is a further band of lotus decoration. On the body of the vessel, a spray of peony and a spray of chrysanthemum are each set within a black-and-white circle, with clouds and cranes filling the spaces between the circles. The piece is estimated to have been made in the mid-twelfth century.
