Painted Lacquered Bowl
채화칠기 · 彩畵漆器

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krChilu refers to a bari, a wide lacquered bowl. Lacquerware is a craft particular to East Asia, unseen in the West, and even today the term remains synonymous with a fine vessel. The Painted Lacquered Bowl is 9 cm high with a rim diameter of 24 cm, and was excavated at Daeseogam-ri, Daedong-gun, South Pyeongan Province. The interior is lacquered red, and several concentric circles are drawn on the bottom. From the centre outward, dragons are painted in red, blue and green, and above them clouds are painted in black, blue and green. Around the rim of the vessel, dotted lines were drawn in blue, green and yellow, and then covered with copper. The exterior is lacquered black and divided into three registers: upper, middle and lower. The upper register bears cloud patterns in yellow and brown; the middle register depicts clouds, mountains and animals in blue and green; and the lower register is encircled with cloud patterns. Two animal-shaped copper rings are attached to the outside of the vessel to serve as handles, and a cicada-shaped handle is attached inside the bowl. Even today the painted decoration remains vivid, the various colours are harmoniously combined, and the state of preservation is good, so this vessel is regarded as an important piece of evidence.
