Mannyeongyo Bridge in Yeongsan, Changnyeong
창녕 영산 만년교 · 昌寧 靈山 萬年橋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a stone bridge built in the shape of a rainbow over a small stream that runs through the village. Because the stream flows down from Namsan Mountain, the bridge is also known as Namcheongyo, or 'South Stream Bridge.' Natural bedrock on either side of the stream serves as the foundation, on which well-dressed granite blocks are stacked in courses to form a rainbow-shaped stone arch, or hongye. Above this, rounded natural stones are piled up and topped with a thin layer of earth, creating a path across the bridge. The road surface curves and lengthens at both ends, giving the bridge a cosier, more inviting feel. It was first built in 1780, the fourth year of King Jeongjo, and rebuilt in 1892, the 29th year of Emperor Gojong. It remains sturdy enough for villagers to use to this day, and is said to have suffered no damage at all, even from flooding.
