Yun Bong-gil was born in Saryang-ri, Deoksan-myeon, Yesan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. He studied at Deoksan Primary School and the Ochi private school, and at the age of nineteen he founded a night school in his hometown, launching a rural enlightenment movement. At twenty he organised the Gakgok Reading Society and compiled a farmers' primer, and at twenty-two he organised the Woljin Society, energetically pursuing a rural movement. As the independence movement grew difficult to sustain within Korea, Patriot Yun Bong-gil went into exile in China at the age of twenty-three and, in 1931, joined the Korean Patriotic Corps led by Kim Ku. He then continued the fight against Japan, and on 29 April 1932 he single-handedly threw a bomb at a ceremony held in Hongkou Park, Shanghai, to celebrate Japan's victory in the Shanghai Incident, successfully killing the Japanese commander-in-chief Shirakawa and other senior Japanese military figures. Arrested on the spot, Patriot Yun was sentenced to death by a single-instance military court martial, transported to Japan in November, and died on 19 December 1932 at Osaka Garrison Prison at the age of twenty-four. Among the relics of Patriot Yun Bong-gil, the first is an oath (seoseomun), one of the objects he left behind, written in his own hand upon joining Kim Ku's Korean Patriotic Corps; the document measures 21.5 cm by 27 cm. The second is his résumé and last testament, likewise among his relics, comprising the résumé and last testament that he wrote in his own hand when he joined the Korean Patriotic Corps in 1931. The testament is written in pen, measures 16.5 cm by 29 cm, and forms a single volume of 17 sheets.
