Calligraphy by Heo Mok
허목 전서 함취당 · 許穆 篆書 含翠堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr"Heo Mok's Seal Script: Hamchwidang" is a horizontal plaque (pyeonaek) showing the typical large-character (daeja) seal-script style of Misu Heo Mok (1595–1682), a leading Confucian scholar and master seal-script calligrapher of the 17th century. It is mounted as a hanging scroll and is in excellent condition. Each character was written on a separate sheet of thick jangji paper, and three sheets were joined together; the ground of the middle character, chwi (翠), is narrower than the others. Below the plaque is a postscript composed in the fourth month of 1791, the 15th year of King Jeongjo of Joseon, by Hong Su-bo (1723–1799), the owner of Hamchwidang, making this a rare example whose provenance can be traced. It also bears four seals of Heo Mok not previously recorded elsewhere, reading Mi-ro (眉老), Hwa (和), Guju-in (九疇人), and Su (叟).
