Folding Screen of Embroidered Chochungdo (Grass and Insects)
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This folding screen of embroidered chochungdo (grass and insects) is made by embroidering grass, butterflies, dragonflies and other insects onto black silk. It consists of eight panels, each measuring 40 cm in width and 64 cm in height. This embroidered screen, which evokes a refined and dignified atmosphere associated with women, features more than twenty identifiable species of plants and insects, including dandelions, China pinks, cockscombs, bees and butterflies, and is notable for its distinctive composition and technique. A further characteristic of this chochungdo embroidered screen is its realistic and detailed depiction of the beauty of nature. It may be regarded as an outstanding work among chochungdo embroidered screens that apply traditional Korean embroidery techniques. It is thought to have been made sometime after the eighteenth century, and its refined, elegant yet realistic quality suggests it was used either in the royal court or in the households of the yangban aristocracy.
