A stupa symbolizes a monk's grave and is where the monk's remains or sari (Buddhist relics) are enshrined. This stupa, now standing within Donghwasa Temple, originally lay fallen in Hak village in Dohak-dong before being moved to its present site. The platform resting on the base stone and the body of the pagoda are both octagonal. The platform, made up of three parts, has its lower and middle support stones carved from a single block. The upper support stone is a separate piece, decorated around its surface with large lotus-flower designs carved in an unadorned style. The body stone has pillar-shaped carvings at each corner, and the broad roof stone has a gentle curve on its upper surface that extends out to the eaves. On top sits a two-tiered finial with fine ornamentation. Judging from the style and carving technique of each part, the stupa is presumed to be a work of the early Goryeo period.
