East and West Three-story Stone Pagodas from Docheonsa Temple Site, Mungyeong
문경 도천사지 동·서 삼층석탑 · 聞慶 道川寺址 東·西 三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are two stone pagodas standing to the east and west in front of Daeungjeon Hall at Jikjisa Temple; they were originally lying toppled at the site of Docheonsa Temple in Mungyeong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and were moved to their present location. Both pagodas share the same style in every part, with a three-storey body rising above a single-tier base. The base, built of several broad flat stones, has pillar-shaped carvings at the corners and centre of each side. Each storey's body stone and roof stone are each made from a single piece of stone, and each body stone has clearly carved pillar-shaped mouldings at its corners. The thin, flat roof stones have five tiers of eaves-supports on the underside of the first and second storeys and four tiers on the third, and the otherwise level eaves rise buoyantly at the four corners. The large finial at the top was newly made and added when the pagodas were relocated in 1976. Although the first-storey body stone is disproportionately tall, the pagodas as a whole convey a refined impression. Given the single-tier base and the degree to which the roof stones curve upward, they are presumed to be works of the Unified Silla period.
