Three-story Stone Pagoda from Docheonsa Temple Site, Mungyeong
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a three-storey stone pagoda standing in front of Birojeon Hall at Jikjisa Temple. In 1974, together with the two three-storey pagodas in front of Daeungjeon Hall (the treasure-designated East and West Three-story Stone Pagodas from Docheonsa Temple Site, Mungyeong), it was moved here from the old site of Docheonsa Temple beside the Geumgang River, north of Ungchang village in Mungyeong, Gyeongsangbuk-do. It has a three-storey body set above a single-tier base. The base stone is laid out broadly, and above it are two tiers of tall cushion stones, built up from several pieces of stone, supporting the base itself. The base is composed of a few slab stones, with pillar-shaped carvings at the corners and centre of each side. In the body, the body stones and roof stones are each made of a single piece of stone, and each body stone has clear pillar-shaped mouldings at its corners. The roof stones are thin and flat, with five tiers of eaves-supports on the underside of each, and a sense of buoyancy is created by the sharply upturned corners. The first-storey body stone is much taller than those of the second and third storeys, but overall the pagoda has well-balanced proportions and a refined appearance, making it an outstanding work that well displays the characteristics of the late Unified Silla period of the ninth century.
