Stone Standing Buddha in Jangjeong-ri, Ganghwa

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a stone Buddha statue of the Goryeo period, standing at the foot of Bongcheonsan Mountain in Hajeom-myeon, Ganghwa-gun, Incheon. It is carved in relief on a thick granite slab, and a shrine hall has now been built to house it. On the crown of the bare head rises a small topknot-shaped protrusion, a mark of the Buddha's wisdom. The oval face is full-fleshed, and the rendering of the eyes, nose and mouth appears somewhat heavy. The ears are unrealistically long, and because the neck is short, the three conventional folds of the neck descend as far as the chest. The robe covering both shoulders is depicted thickly, so that it fails to reveal the contours of the body, and the narrow, rounded shoulder line gives the statue a somewhat hunched appearance. The U-shaped folds of the robe flow down from the chest to the area of the knees, but are treated in a formalised and simplified manner. The right hand is lowered below the waist with the palm facing outward, while the left hand is raised in front of the chest with the fingers bent. Around the body, two raised lines separate the body halo from the head halo; between the two lines round beads are carved at intervals, and flame patterns are carved along the edges of both halos. This statue, in which a flat and linear carving style is prominent, shows simplification and omission in every respect, indicating a later date. The fleshy face, short neck, hunched shoulders and formalised robe folds are all features that clearly show the characteristics of Goryeo-period Buddhist statues.
